Rarely use miniatures/battlemaps, preferring the Theater of the Mind, but it sounds like your system is pretty similar to the phases in the RC. Morale/Movement/Missile/Magic/Melee, etc. I still enjoy adding a "Declaration" step just so everyone's on the same page with their intentions.

Another I experimented with was more of a "Count Up" system and assigning actions a dice: Movement was d6, Melee was the damage dice, Magic was a d8+Spell Level. Everyone rolls their dice based on what they want to do and we count up from one and resolve.

ktreyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16680322763419091488noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1407126162785839479.post-71493959756643166902020-05-06T05:40:16.397-05:002020-05-06T05:40:16.397-05:00I am playing without initiative. Basically, the DM decides what the NPCs and monsters will do, and asks what each player will do. Then, everything is resolved simultaneously. Some characters/monsters will hit and die in the same round. It is messy and fun, as a combat should be. To make it a bit more realistic, if characters are moving to engage combat, attacks of missile weapons at them is resolved first, since they might die as they move. Spells are also resolved last in the round, since casting concentration could be broken, and it should be something that requires more time to finalise.
